Ask Mom

So many people have asked my family questions about my epilepsy. Here is your chance to ask my mom. She will answer all questions pertaining to and relevant to my epilepsy right here. Just email your questions to mom@itsnotwhoiam.com. Remember mom is not a doctor and all medical questions should be answered by a medical professional. Mom can only answer questions/concerns/comments as a mom and nothing else.

QUESTION: Hello.  My name is Karen H.  I learned about Sara's website from a friend.  I am in the Buffalo area and will be taking my 5 year old daughter for the 3 day monitoring at Children's hospital this week.  She was diagnosed with epilepsy almost 2 years ago but seems to be having a different type of seizure now.

Do you have any suggestions of what to tell my daughter that may help ease her mind as we go into the hospital?  She has a tendency to over-think things and get worried so I don't want to get into details with her but I also don't want to make something up.

Thank you very much. Karen Nov. 16, 2007

ANSWER:Hi Karen, Be truthful but tell only what you need to. Let her know her scalp
will be wired to a machine and she will be wearing what will look like a hat for the
time there. Sara went through the same thing at 2 and 1/2. Sara enjoyed having
the TV all to herself and not sharing with her sisters. She was able to bring all her
favorite movies and toys. I hope you can do the same. Let her know it will be like an
adventure. That she is the star, and the wires will be attached to help the doctors find
out how to make her feel better.

I hope this helps. Please let me know how it works out.

Take care, Tanya
